Beirut Explosion in Lebanon

On August 5, 2020: 

  • An explosion in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, killed around 150, wounded thousands, and left countless more homeless
  • The explosion was an accident caused by a warehouse full of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in bombs 
  • The chemicals were illegally stored at the port, demonstrating the negligence of public officials
  •  Lebanon's prime minister resigned due to public backlash and anti-government protests 
  • Lebanon's economy, on the verge of collapse, currently requires immediate help and relief
